Commercial roles within industry include estimators, buyers and quantity surveyors, some of which often lead to senior commercial positions.

Personal Attributes

Responsibilities will vary depending on the role, level and sector within construction, i.e. residential development, commercial construction, but here’s a brief overview of typical duties:

  • Assist with maintaining cost control throughout development
  • Assist with accurate costing for each aspect of site development
  • Assist with compiling reports on cost and cash flow using the support systems available
  • Assist with tender preparation and procurement of sub-contractors via tender procedures
  • Process subcontract orders, payments and variations, using excel and a payment system
  • Understand and assist with evaluation and agreement of variations and instructions
  • Control commercial aspects and responsibilities with regards to respective RSL’s
  • Attend all team meetings as required
  • General departmental administration
  • Provide other appropriate ad hoc duties and administrative support as and when required
  • Maintain relevant filing systems and databases
  • Assist with the compilation of all weekly, monthly and quarterly reports as required

In addition, bonuses are common if targets are met and significant increases in salary can often be achieved.

The working environment could be a combination of office and site visits and may involve overnight stays depending on the role, sector and of course location.

Although the industry is a male-dominated profession, the number of female recruits is growing in both private practice and the public sector due to focused career campaigns by major leading developers such as Barratt London.
