Demand for Offsite Design Skills Rising

26/06/2017

Design functions within the built environment play a crucial part in the successful completion on any building or structure, with the introduction of new technology and the increased use in offsite construction designers at all levels will need a new range of digital capabilities. Roles within this sector include:

Skilled worker
3D Visualiser, CAD Modeller
Supervisor
Architectural Technician, BIM Technician, Pre-construction Designer, Building Services Engineer
Manager
Electrical Engineer
Senior Manager/Professional
Architect, Design Engineer, Structural Engineer

Possibly the most imperative competency is the adoption of 3D digital models with rich data so that designs can be robustly tested and agreed in advance of manufacture to avoid costly errors and modification at later stages.

Qualifications typically include:
Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) Level 2
HNC/D (e.g. Architectural Technology)
HNC/FdSc Sustainable Construction & Built Environment
BIM and Integrated Design
MSc/PgDip/PgCert
SVQ (e.g. Built Environment Design)
Modern Apprenticeships (e.g. Timber Manufacture Design)
Construction Technologies Theory Level 3

Research from the CIBT now suggests the above modules should be reviewed to include the elements of the digital transformation which lies ahead.  One significant obstacle for further design learning and development is the shortage of tutors with the relevant experience and knowledge in the emerging area of design for manufacture and assembly.  Government and professional bodies are collaborating to find improvements and solutions to overcome these challenges.
